THE FRENCHIFIED

At the end of the XVIII century, in front of the New Coliseum (a Downtown theater) a group of friends gathered around. Tradition baptized them as the Frenchified because they showed a strong preference and liking for French tastes and ideals. The Frenchified better known as Esteban Maurel, Juan Laussel, Jeronimo Covarrubias Portatui, Juan de Murguiery, and Manuel Enderica.

Viceroy Branciforte saw subversive ideas in these meetings and at one time he ordered to have them arrested, while they were in a social gathering in the Café de la Profesa, such was their admiration for France that to inflict more drama to the scene, the Frenchified sung “La Marseillese”, the French national anthem accompanied in the piano by the organist of the cathedral.
