A PILGRIMAGE THAT ENDED IN A QUARREL

An Italian man, Gemelli Carreri got to witness among other happenings, the procession of Holy Thursday, in his work he included a telling of something very curious that happened in 1697. According to the voyager, in the capital of New Spain, paraded in procession three groups, each one on its own: The one by the members of the brotherhood of the Holy Trinity, the other group of the brothers of Saint Gregory of the company of Jesus and also the group of the brothers of San Francisco, known as the “Procession of the Chinese” like it was called because it was composed in its majority by people originating from the Philippines. Between being amusing and critical, Carreri tells that because of distraction of transit, the procession of the Holy Trinity and the one by the “Chinese” men met face to face once they got to the Royal Palace, currently known as National Palace, like none of the processions yielded to one another, the shame of deteriorating their hierarchy caused them to get involved in heated disputes of name calling and insults, they got into a quarrel and the brothers started beating each other and ended up using their crosses and sticks that obviously wounded up being charged against the rival brotherhood. According to Carreri, the solemn procession ended with injuries and some deaths.
